The read: the Friday close, with the move across the whole week beside it; not the one-session change the daily Brief shows. The implication: the index level alone never says whether the week was broad or carried by a couple of names; breadth and turnover do.

What the index hid: highly concentrated; the single heaviest name took 67% of one session’s turnover. A week can look active and still be carried by one counter. Each close, fully broken down; After the Bell →

How to read this: short government paper is the opportunity cost of taking equity risk. Why it matters: the higher the front end sits, the more dividends, earnings growth and liquidity equities must deliver to clear it. Educational; not advice.

How to read this: each link carries its own authority and its own lag; FX moves daily, fuel caps monthly, food weekly, CPI monthly. Why it matters: this is the chain that turns a currency move into a cost-of-living move. Descriptive, not predictive; the links are shown, not forecast.

The week in 90 seconds

The next sessions test whether a narrow board can reconnect the two indices
Two banks set the turnover baseline; distribution is the next evidence
WatchDSE breadth and turnover distributionweek of 10 Aug 2026
The next sessions test whether a narrow board can reconnect the two indices
Signal
4,183.38 fell 0.17% Friday-to-Friday and 9,169.71 0.49%; six of 19 comparable counters rose while Commercial Services gained 1.86%.
Why it matters
The sector gain did not turn the broader week higher. Wider participation, not one headline move, would strengthen the next index reading.
What to watch
Confirmation: more comparable counters rise and DSEI and TSI align. Weakening evidence: breadth stays thin or the indices keep diverging.

Liquidity test
Two banks set the turnover baseline; distribution is the next evidence
Signal
Five verified sessions carried TZS 25.77bn; NMB and CRDB supplied TZS 22.02bn, or 85.4%, and exceeded 73% in every session.
Why it matters
The total describes available liquidity only after its concentration is visible. Broader value would reduce dependence on two counters.
What to watch
Confirmation: turnover spreads across more names. Weakening evidence: the banks again dominate value even if the total rises.

Dated rates catalyst
The 12 August bill auction is the week's cleanest scheduled rates test
Signal
The latest 91-day yield is 3.3472%, about 290bp below the 6.25% CBR; the 182-day is 4.7799% and the 364-day 7.0258%.
Why it matters
Those points remain from 15 July. The verified 12 August auction can update the curve without treating an old result as current pricing.
What to watch
Confirmation or weakening comes from the official result: clearing tenors, weighted yields and the disclosed demand pattern.
Source: Bank of Tanzania · Edition 9 Aug 2026 · Data verified · interpretation: Medium confidence
Credit thesis
Credit acceleration needs persistence and sector detail, not extrapolation
Signal
BoT's July review put June private-credit growth at 28.1%, up from 23.2% in May; headline inflation eased to 4.0% while core rose to 3.7%.
Why it matters
Faster intermediation arrived without a headline-inflation break, but the core measure moved higher. One monthly print cannot settle durability.
What to watch
Confirmation: the next review sustains growth across sectors. Weakening evidence: a reversal or concentration in a narrow lending category.
Source: Bank of Tanzania · Edition 9 Aug 2026 · Data verified · interpretation: Medium confidence
Currency test
The next official sheets test a modest weekly shilling gain and Friday reversal
Signal
BoT's USD/TZS mean fell 0.19% from 2,649.7472 on 31 July to 2,644.7918 on 7 August; Friday alone recorded a 0.03% rise.
Why it matters
The intervals moved in opposite directions. More same-source observations are needed before either becomes a durable currency signal.
What to watch
Confirmation: subsequent official means remain below 31 July. Weakening evidence: the Friday reversal extends beyond one observation.
Source: Bank of Tanzania · Edition 9 Aug 2026 · Data verified · interpretation: Medium confidence
Dated issuer catalyst
NMB's subdivision sequence provides a mechanical liquidity test, not a value signal
Signal
The issuer notice sets 19 August as the final cum-split day, 20 to 21 August for suspension and 24 August for effectiveness and resumption.
Why it matters
A one-for-ten split changes shares outstanding and unit price, not aggregate economic value. Its evidence is order count, spread, depth and turnover.
What to watch
Confirmation: the sequence occurs as notified and participation broadens. Weakening evidence: activity stays concentrated after the reset.

The Ghost
The model book
The Ghost's hypothetical TZS 500m model ledger enters the week at +8.40% since inception at its 7 Aug mark. The observable tests are broader listed-market participation, the official 12 August rates print and the dated NMB mechanics; not trading signals.
Ghost relevance: how today’s rates, FX, gold and inflation read against a hypothetical model-book; educational, not advice.
How these were chosen: not hand-picked; the name that carried the tape, the week’s biggest gain and steepest fall, then the heaviest remaining names. Educational context only; not a recommendation, and never a price target.
Six of 19 comparable counters rose, while NMB and CRDB supplied 85.4% of five-session turnover; the next closes test whether breadth and value spread.

Week-ahead edition; a forward framing of Monday 10 through Friday 14 August 2026, frozen to the Friday verified close (7 Aug 2026). Compiled from public sources for information and education only; not investment advice, a forecast or a recommendation. Equity, index, breadth and turnover figures reconcile to DSE authority files; the TZS 25.77bn weekly turnover is the sum of five verified session tapes. Rates, the 12 August Treasury-bill date and FX use Bank of Tanzania records; credit, inflation, reserves and exports use the July 2026 Bank of Tanzania Monthly Economic Review published on 5 August. NMB dates use the reviewed issuer notice. The current Wire hand-off was read first: its one primary-grade administrative candidate was deliberately omitted because it did not change the selected verified market, macro or dated-catalyst evidence. A verified foreign-flow split and a same-source weekly gold return were unavailable and are not inferred. Undated checkpoints remain explicitly undated. For live levels, see Markets.
